Official Website Anthology of the famous rebellious avant guardiste lebanese painter, more about him and his fabulous career in Lebanon, France, Italy, Japan, England, Brazil... Anthology < Back to Home Khalifé’s canvases are full of strong colors punctuated by stocatto swirlings, springings and spottings of his brush […] Khalifé’s canvases are full of strong colors punctuated by stocatto swirlings, springings and spottings of his brush. Vivid turquoises, solid reds and electric blues battle for attention, and occasionally jig and spiral like sea weed suspended in an underwater current. […] The exhibit will probably not be an easy one for the general public to like, but I do feel that Khalifé has cut no corners by trying to soften what he has to say, and has done this directly and strongly. For this he deserves careful consideration. Cathy LATTA (Daily Star, 1970) […] Jean Khalifé feels that the very substance of painting is the simmering life that emanates from each touch placed on the canvas, like the string of the violin vibrating under the bow of the musician. […] If it has to be stored under a label, it will be under that of non-figurative. Undoubtedly Khalifé kept the vocation of all oriental for a kind of mystical illumination. Georges CYR (Encyclopedia of International Contemporary Art, 1958 ) […] Few artists, in my opinion, display as much independence and autonomy as Khalifé. Salah STETIE (The Orient, 1959) […] Khalifé's painting is like a handshake: it reassures at the same time that it delights. André BERCOFF (L’Orient Littéraire, 1961) […] Khalifé's painting offers us magical images through a precious technique in which we discover old craft traditions but, at the same time, it reveals a remarkable knowledge of the formal value systems of the West. […] The art of Khalifé remains rooted in a taste formed over the centuries, a taste of luxury and sunshine, which has spread to the Mediterranean. José-Augusto FRANÇA (Today, Art and Architecture, Paris, 1963) […] The first Parisian exhibition by Lebanese painter Jean Khalifé strikes with his loyalty - beyond the picturesque - to his oriental vocation. We find through its lyrical abstraction the magic of colors, the very essence of a poetry made of violence and delicacy, refinement and cruelty which exerts a certain charm on the visitor. Claude NUNEZ (ARTS- Paris 1963) […] Khalifé is willingly austere. His painting does not use the wiles of contrast; on the contrary, it seeks a dull harmony with reconciled values. In the end, this painting manages to be a painting imbued with beautiful freedom. François PLUCHART (Combat, Paris, 1963) […] the show at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, is his first exhibition in this country. He is delighted with it, half of the work being paintings he has done since his arrival in London. […] Colour is priority in his paintings. Solid, expressive slabs building up the thickly covered canvas. The painter he admires very much is Bonnard – “because the subject for Bonnard – whether it was nudes, buildings or countryside – was explained in term of colours. With colour you can express so much more tragedy or happiness, the real depths of emotion.”A.H. (Oxford Mail. 1971) […] The abstract design of his nudes is an unconvincing one without the strength that this artist has proven he has. His women are pallidly romantic and suggest a sad nostalgia for something that is no longer real to Khalifé, but which he insists on holding on to. Helen KHAL (The Monday Morning, 1973) […] It didn’t take me long to discover that he had mastered his craft to the point that it liberated him from technical difficulties and allowed the kind of fluidity that characterizes his works. His freedom of expression remained impeccable during his entire career. Beyond this mastery, there was something “cosmic” about his one-going battles with art that always baffled me, and drew me in, as if for a long journey. […] His successive strokes of color were creating a continuous fragmentation of pigments out of which forms were merging as if from the laws of matter. These colors have always been vivid, saturated, and as “ancient” as the soil and history of this part of the world. They seem to be distilled by the sun’s power and, in the same time, they seem to be autonomous, independent from their own represented figures. […] In general, Nature is not absent in his major work, but deviated; the green reflections of the sea, the steel-like luminosity of the foam crowning the waves, his swirls and busy lines, all achieve a transfiguration of matter. The painter here is not philosopher but a medium. The artist, here, turns his back to whatever we call “civilized” in order to challenge some basic principle, some basic truth, and communicate it. Etel ADNAN (Conference at L.A.U., 2005) […] The method in a work painted by Khalifé reveals a presence much out of the ordinary - a presence of strength, energy, and a virile rationality of design. Another factor comes to light: the quality of the graceful and energetic colour that explodes in flowers and bouquets and the large contrasted surfaces of sunlight, shadow, and sea. […] Drawing and colour, however, remain subservient to an inner truth, truth found in the luminous foreheads of young girls that a contrast of light and shade causes to "hesitate". Sadness, hope, dialogue, exchange - so many gestures of soul and body which express love and expectation. Elsewhere it is the reign of silence and of anguish which can be seen... His painting is equally inspired by those profound movements of the soul which give to the human body such a wealth of emotional expression. And it is essentially a human message, a witness of human tenderness.

Official Website Biography of the famous rebellious lebanese painter, more about him his masterpieces his career in Lebanon, France, Italy, Japan, England, Brazil... Biography < Back to Home “The outside world is only an accessory. I wear my paintings in my depths, they are somehow nailed to my skin…” Jean Khalifé (1923–1978) was a pioneering Lebanese painter and a rebellious figure in the emergence of abstract art in the Middle East. For him, painting was a dynamic interplay of shapes and colors through which space unfolds and emotion is revealed. Although trained in classical academic techniques, he quickly rejected rigid theories, seeking instead to move beyond figuration. His work aimed to endow color and form with an evocative power capable of transmitting emotion directly to the viewer. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art in Lebanon, whose work has consistently drawn both public admiration and critical attention. Over Seventy-Five solo and group exhibitions worldwide—across Lebanon, France, England, Italy, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Japan, and Brazil—have marked his career. His works are held in numerous private and institutional collections, including museums and foundations in Lebanon and internationally (USA, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, India, Russia, and North Africa). Jean Khalifé also played a pivotal pedagogical role, teaching at several prestigious institutions. He actively advocated for the rights of art educators in Lebanon, particularly during his presidency of the Lebanese Artists Association for Painters and Sculptors (LAAPS), and later as Head of the Art Department at the Lebanese University . He contributed significantly to the development of major art institutions and cultural initiatives. The establishment of the Jean Khalifé Museum in his native village of Hadtoun stands as a testament to the Lebanese State’s recognition of his artistic legacy. More about Jean Jean Khalifé was born in Hadtoun, a village in northern Lebanon.
