Official Website Words of the famous rebellious lebanese painter, more about him, his and his fabulous career in Lebanon France Italy Japan England Brazil His Words < Back to Home Ses paroles english “I believe I am not entitled to forge what the student wants to express. I do not interfere except as a last resort and when asked. I can teach him a specific technique but the expression belongs only to him”. “My preference was always the nude, but in Lebanon it is so hard to find a model so I find myself heading back automatically towards the landscape”. “I definitely opt for the abstract. The artist who does an informal work of art is not but pointing at the describable items of the folklore. Painting a pot of flowers, a Lebanese farmer, a traditional landscape, is no longer an act of creation”. “Being a painter I am part of the universe. I am not a star turning around the sun, rather a planet around which turns the sun. It obsesses me. I can see the relativity between the tiny and the infinitely big. I believe this is where the secret of painting lies: a painting is a partial and incomplete picture, yet it represents and constitutes a universe. Beautiful or not, successful or not, is, from its “raison d’être”, totally secondary. “It’s color that guides the creation of my paintings. As a whole, it cannot break loose from the birth of forms. Powerful, lyrical, a painting is a color-form where space unfolds. Seen from a distance, it tightens as a construction; seen closely, color is all its substance. A painting is, for me, a power of contrasts, a force on the wall that creates its surroundings”. “The outside world is only an accessory. I carry my paintings in the core of my being, they are nailed to my skin”. “I reached a point where the figurative and the abstract are one. My figurative today is completely different. It is molten, crushed over the background: because of working and re-working the figurative and the abstract, I’ve reached a point where I believe that all the reasons behind the abstract are found entirely inside the figurative, at least as I see it!”. “I am for the universality of art. What matters to me is the deep attitude that the artist has towards the world for his art to touch the whole humanity. The pioneer artist is not the product of a heritage rather its creator”. “In my paintings, I subject the drawing to the color; that doesn’t prevent my paintings from being drawn”. “I belong to a Lebanese source of inspiration, to an ethnical source. Yet, ethnicity is a key factor in personalizing an art work. I belong to the spiritual school of Gébran Khalil Gébran and Hoyek, the sculptor. Art without a spiritual foundation is nothing” “… the war reminded us that a country without a cultural and an artistic past is a country with no soul. It can be easily swept”. “The artworks belonging to the war period will be a dower destined to the future Lebanese generations. I want them to be the theme of a posthumous exhibition, given their documentary value”. ““I do not like hypocrite colors, I mean mixed ones; pure colors are marvelous”. “I am a research painter and each time I reach some evidence, I turn the page for a new pursuit; and they say: “what a scandal, he changed!”. I promised myself to continue on this path. I believe research is a work of art, and art is not an unchanging data…. … Everyone understands that the Oriental art was never a mere study of perspective and chiaroscuro, but a free and noble art, a highly meaningful art of abstraction…” “As for my oriental identity, that’s fine, I have a Lebanese passport which tells me that, but an artistic identity is not a problem for me. I don’t need to go to museums to see a Phoenician past, or an Assyrian past, or Turkish, or any other type of art. Art for me is not in folklore, it comes from my own being”.

Official Website Biography of the famous rebellious lebanese painter, more about him his masterpieces his career in Lebanon, France, Italy, Japan, England, Brazil... Biography < Back to Home “The outside world is only an accessory. I wear my paintings in my depths, they are somehow nailed to my skin…” Jean Khalifé (1923–1978) was a pioneering Lebanese painter and a rebellious figure in the emergence of abstract art in the Middle East. For him, painting was a dynamic interplay of shapes and colors through which space unfolds and emotion is revealed. Although trained in classical academic techniques, he quickly rejected rigid theories, seeking instead to move beyond figuration. His work aimed to endow color and form with an evocative power capable of transmitting emotion directly to the viewer. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstract art in Lebanon, whose work has consistently drawn both public admiration and critical attention. Over Seventy-Five solo and group exhibitions worldwide—across Lebanon, France, England, Italy, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Japan, and Brazil—have marked his career. His works are held in numerous private and institutional collections, including museums and foundations in Lebanon and internationally (USA, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, Poland, India, Russia, and North Africa). Jean Khalifé also played a pivotal pedagogical role, teaching at several prestigious institutions. He actively advocated for the rights of art educators in Lebanon, particularly during his presidency of the Lebanese Artists Association for Painters and Sculptors (LAAPS), and later as Head of the Art Department at the Lebanese University . He contributed significantly to the development of major art institutions and cultural initiatives. The establishment of the Jean Khalifé Museum in his native village of Hadtoun stands as a testament to the Lebanese State’s recognition of his artistic legacy. More about Jean Jean Khalifé was born in Hadtoun, a village in northern Lebanon.
